The Dealer Plate

barKoder gave The Dealer Plate fast, reliable barcode scanning on any phone. We integrated the React Native SDK into both our iOS and Android apps in short order, and scanning went from the flaky part of our product to a feature our dealers just trust.

Challenge

The Dealer Plate is a mobile application for iOS and Android that helps auto dealerships manage their dealer plates. Barcode scanning is a core part of the workflow, allowing dealership staff to capture information with their phone cameras instead of entering it manually.

Because users are dealership employees rather than warehouse workers equipped with dedicated scanners, the solution needed to turn an ordinary smartphone into a dependable scanning device. The team regularly encountered challenging barcodes, including small 1D codes, awkward scanning angles, glare, low-light conditions, and dense PDF417 codes that basic camera-scanning libraries struggled to decode reliably.

The Dealer Plate had previously used another commercial barcode SDK and experimented with an open-source scanner, but needed a more reliable solution that could eliminate slow, error-prone manual data entry while working consistently across both mobile platforms.

Solution

The Dealer Plate integrated barKoder through its React Native plugin, allowing the development team to support both iOS and Android from a single codebase. barKoder also provided the broad symbology coverage they needed within one SDK.

Reliable PDF417 decoding using an ordinary smartphone camera was a major deciding factor. Integration was straightforward: the team added the BarkoderView component to its existing screens, enabled the required barcode symbologies, and quickly had scanning working across both platforms.

The SDK also proved capable of handling the difficult real-world scanning conditions encountered by dealerships, turning barcode capture from one of the less dependable parts of the application into a feature users could rely on. When technical questions arose, the barKoder support team responded quickly with clear guidance.

Result

After integrating barKoder, barcode scanning became the default data-capture method within The Dealer Plate rather than an optional convenience.

Tasks that previously required approximately two minutes of careful manual entry can now be completed in under 10 seconds using the phone camera. At the same time, transcription errors have effectively disappeared from the workflow.

The Dealer Plate now provides fast, reliable scanning across both iOS and Android, including difficult small, damaged, and dense barcodes such as PDF417. For a small development team maintaining a cross-platform application, dependable scanning from a single React Native codebase has become a significant advantage.
